Hi Marie--

Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts and kudos. I agree - seeing her work is a delight. I love that she finally gave in to the b.s. surrounding her and did her own thing.

Hi Laura, nice to get your feedback. How cool you taught art in a milieu where you were among great art. The Walla Walla Factory certainly deserves a nod given their ability to transform her work so realistically.

The first one I saw was on the street in Milwaukee. I had no idea it was bronze. I thought it was actually driftwood!

Yes, exactly! I was in a museum and got so close the guard told me to back away. The transformation from original to bronze is an art form in itself. Thanks for your comment.

This is a wonderful overview of Butterfield's career. I don't remember when I first saw a Butterfield horse; it must have been in the 80s. But for over 30 years, I had the good fortune to teach art appreciation and art history using the University of Kentucky Art Museum in Lexington, KY, which owns her "EastWest." The joy I've found in the work on my own behalf has been amplified by seeing students' astonished discovery of the illusion created by the patina on the cast bronze and their pleasure in its "horse-ness."

What a wonderful piece! I have actually seen one of her horses in person and it was absolutely breathtaking! But I love that you showed the amazing range of her work. Thank you!
